I ordered a set of Boyesen #740 Power Reeds. $16.95 for the reeds and $7.35 shipping for a total of $34.30 for two sets of reeds.

These reeds are listed for the Lead 80, which is the European version of the Aero.

Super simple install 2 screws and nuts. You will notice that the reed stops are deleted, which allows the reeds to open farther, also these are two-stage reeds.

I've used this style of reeds in several engines, from stock to race motors. Improved low end throttle response and more top speed (power and RPM).

Once the weather warms up enough to install them I will and report the results.

FYI, this reed set up, which has a larger area than the SA50 3 petal reeds is a direct bolt in. And along with the Aero 80 intake is about a 20% improvement in flow area over the SA50. On top of that the manifold will handle the larger 16 mm venturi and larger throttle bore carb.

The actual reed block on the outside is the physical same size as the SA50 reed block and uses the same bolt battern However the openings into the reeds them self are bigger.

Inlet reed opening
AF16 25.36 mm X 19.91 mm.
Aero 80 33.86 mm X 22.38 mm.

Outlet
AF16 28.02 mm X 20.02 mm
Aero 80 33.84 mm X 21.73 mm

Along with Aero 80 intake manifold which is a lot bigger in diameter, IMHO, this would be an and cheap upgrade for the intake.

Af16 intake 16.82 mm opening at the carb.
Aero 80 intake 19.40 mm opening at the carb.

Otherwise this intake will handle a bigger PB carb than the AF16 setup. The Aero 80 carb is a 16 mm venturi and the throttle bore is 19 mm where as the Af16 PB carb has a 16 mm throttle bore. At the reed end both manifolds match the reed opening.

Oh and I have three of the Aero 80 intakes and reed set ups on hand.

Nice research. I'll update the SA50 page to mention this. Do you know if the AF16 is the early model SA50 ('88-93) or the more recent model ('94-'01).

I couldn't tell you. The AF16 and AF28 stuff I acquired came with a bunch of other things I bought from a guy unloading all sorts of stuff. It was all labeled but I don't have the engines.

The info I do have is:

1985-1987 Aero + 1987 ELITE SE50 + 1988-1993 SA 50, ALL = AF05 E

994-2001 ELITE SA50 = AF16 E

Oh and this Aero 80 reed cage will also fit the AF05E engines with the 4 bolt intake. It will not fit the AF05E Spree(NQ50), Elite E (SB50) or the 1985 Aero 50 (NB50M) which all have a 2 bolt intake.

Thanks

The reeds seem more expensive now at $27, and they want $30 to post to me in the UK.

That sucks. Mainly because there is no way it cost anything close to $30 to mail those reeds to you in the UK. I just bought a IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) for the Lead 50 and 80 and shipping to the US from the UK was only GBP 6.70 which is $11.12 USD and I know the manual weighs at least 20 times what the reeds do.

You might try finding a Boyesen dealer in the UK and get them from them, Probably cheaper that way.

Here you go.

I contacted them but they only do wholesale/sell to trade, so I needed to find another stockist.

edit: have found a local stockist, just waiting to hear back
