hey guys, i wanted a bike since i was 10yrs old and now since i moved out of the house and collected the money, im buying my first bike (cbr 1000rr). But im worried, ive never acutally manually changed gears before, not even on a car, so i was just wondering, is it hard to learn how to use the clutch and pedal shifter? Any suggestions on how to improve before getting the bike?
March 30, 2009 at 10:43 pm #17441MunchParticipantMSF!!! MSF!!!! OUCH!!! 1000…. not even a first run to learn…..whew man, pace yourself. Take the MSF course!
Definitely Highly and severely and most importantly even ….suggest alot of clutch engage/disengage practice. Meaning have the bike idle…. drop it into first and slowly…ever so slowly let out the clutch lever til you feel it pull you ever so slightly forward. Pull the clutch back in to stop motion and do it again.
Parkinglots will be your friend/ life savor. Find one… and do alot of practices. Maybe JayT will be nice enough to list some easy ones with descriptions to get you at a safe pace.
Other then that …grats… good luck…. stay safe… and tell us of your progress!!March 30, 2009 at 11:22 pm #17444SantaCruzRiderParticipantOne of the great things about the 1000rr is that it revs so high that you probably don’t need to shift out of first until you’re at freeway speed.
I figure that I do half of my shifting just to give my left foot a bit of a stretch.
Seriously, take a class. Shifting isn’t difficult, but the 1000 is not going to be the least bit forgiving of your learning curve. Also, wear all your safety gear, make sure your insurance is paid and grip the throttle low to reduce the launch velocity.
Best of luck.

March 31, 2009 at 2:13 am #17450nau_lax21Participanttheyre all right. take the msf, and dont get a 1k supersport as your first bike. that is a TERRIBLE idea.
there are plenty of good looking sportbikes that are a million times more suitable for a beginner like yourself. take a look at the ninja 250, ninja 500, gs500, even the sv650. those would be ideal, but just about any bike makes more sense for you than a literbike.
another plus about the smaller bikes, insurance is much less and the bikes are cheaper too!

March 31, 2009 at 1:19 pm #17456Clay DowlingParticipantMake sure you have your organ doner card filled out, and your next of kin know about it. Might want to drop a notarized letter off at the local hospitals too, so they’ve got your intentions on file and trouble can be saved. Getting relevant organs typed and that data put on file would also be a good idea, so recipients can be lined up ahead of time.
The CBR 1000 is a beautiful bike, but just watching video of those machines gives me the heebie jeebies. They’re meant for pros. You need to start out with something designed for somebody at your skill level. Check out the ninjas, which are great bikes with a good reputation for new riders, and nice styling.
March 31, 2009 at 1:20 pm #17457CandiceParticipantPlease take the MSF course ASAP and do not buy that cbr1000rr.
March 31, 2009 at 5:53 pm #17462Jay TParticipantWOW, this is one of those questions that sounds like it was asked by a shill poster. Have a look around this forum and kind of get an idea of what folks are getting for beginner bikes. Most of them are not over 600cc. I am with these guys take the class. You will shift a lot there (up to 3rd gear in one exercise). What you are talking about is a bit like taking an elephant gun to rabbit hunt.
March 31, 2009 at 7:20 pm #17468belomeParticipantIt smells like troll in here… either that or someone didn’t pass his IQ test.
March 31, 2009 at 7:48 pm #17471bigguybbrParticipantSome people really are that crazy though. A good friend of mine tried to talk me into a liter bike as my first going on about “Oh it’s all just wrist control”.
Then again his first bike was an r6, and he rode that home with no previous experience. Like i said, crazy… I’m amazed he isn’t a splat mark somewhere.
March 31, 2009 at 10:23 pm #17473Sangria7Participant1000rr without MSF as first time biker = statistic…
April 1, 2009 at 2:31 pm #17479bigguybbrParticipantIt’ll go from zero to upside down on the pavement in 3 seconds flat!
April 2, 2009 at 6:24 pm #17488alaaaaaaaaanParticipantObvious troll is obvious!
April 6, 2009 at 4:50 pm #17547Jay TParticipantWe either we embarrassed this guy off (would feel bad about that) or it was an early April fools (not feeling so bad about that). Fool me once…
