Just ran across this site and thought I’d drop in and see if I can share some knowledge to “flatten” the learning curve for some of you new or newish riders. A little about myself;
I always had a passion for motorcycles even at a very early age. I wasn’t allowed to even stand close to a motorcycle, let alone own one. After I graduated college and got out on my own, that old itch for a bike continued and I began to seek out any info I could on motorcycles, motorcycling and how to get started. This was in 1995, and there was no internet to speak of, so it wasn’t as easy as it probably is now.
Essentially, I started my riding career by taking what is now called the MSF Basic Rider Course. Without a doubt, that was the best decision that I ever made as far as getting my riding career kicked off properly. Now, 16 years later, I have well over 400,000 miles and I’ve riden in every state on the continent, Alaska and every province in Canada. In the last few years, I’ve taking up track days and road racing, and late this year, I became an MSF Rider Coach.
One important point that I want to leave everyone here with is this; Do not start riding without first taking the Basic Rider Course as offered by the MSF. Your mom, dad, sister or best friend can’t teach you, and trying to learn this way or by teaching yourself will only cause injury to yourself, damage or destruction of your motorcycle more than likely, you’ll end up never learning enough to really enjoy the sport! It’s well worth the investment of a weekend!
I’m proof the system works. All those miles over 15-16 years? I’ve never had an accident. Sure, some of it’s luck, but there is no substitute for good, solid training!
Ride safe out there!
