My Russian car will be in a movie

Post by lalunette »

I own what is probably the last Lada station wagon in Central and Eastern Canada !!

It's a '91 Lada wagon, model is 2104. It has a fun little 1.5L engine with a Weber carb and a 5 spd transmission.

Anyhow, "Hollywood" is coming to town next month to film a movie called "Siberia" with Keanu Reeves... and they need Russian cars !!!

The "car scout" came to see the car last Sunday and said he couldn't see how they could say no to my car.

Here is my baby!!

The Lada is going to earn you a bit of $

That's a cool, quirky car! How is it to live with? Do you drive it often? What about parts availability?

Wow that is in good shape! The ones in Ontario rusted out so fast you could hear them rusting on quiet night. lol. My friends had one with the crank start option, that was cool back in the day
presently enjoy riding a Ruckus and a Super 9. Tinkering with a Riva 180 and a couple of old Puch SV's. In the off season I enjoy a 1999 Polaris Indy 600 XLT Touring and a 2014 Artic Cat Prowler side by side

That's a beaut you got there. Love the wipers on the headlights. There is a white Lada Cossack in the area that I see every so often. Loved them when I first started driving still think they are cool. As long as you can fix them.

I used to drive it almost every day back when I got it in 2008 but ended up parking it so I could do some rust repairs. Got it running again in 2016 and plan on using it more frequently.

I do all my own maintenance and order parts directly from Moscow. In fact, I'm going to the post office today to pick up a new water pump, hoses, thermal switch (for the rad) and thermometer sending unit for the gauge in the dash.

You will be happy to learn that mine does have the crank start option but I would need to drill the front bumper in order to fit the crank !!

Well, good news... I am not the last Lada 2104 owner in Canada !!

I confirmed via contacts that there is still one in almost road-worthy condition in Saskatchewan and one being tinkered on in Alberta.

Also, I found out a week ago that there is another 2104 in a storage unit in a small town 90 minutes south of where I live... and the owner is giving it to me.

It is an '86 model with only 40,000 kms on the clock. The owner says it is also rust-free !!!

I am going on a road trip on Sunday June 4th to retrieve this rare jewel. THe intent is to bring it back to my town, park it in my garage and assess what it needs in order to bring it back to life !!!

Pics to follow !!

So far I've ascertained that the body and paint are in GREAT shape. There is virtually NO rust.

The undercarriage is clean and no rust there either.

The tires are new from when the car was stored. However, the rims need to be addressed. I'm thinking sandblast & powder coat.

The gas tank stinks and will need to be cleaned out and relined.

The mechanical gas pump is disconnected but still works.

The carb has corrosion everywhere. I'm going to order a new one instead of wasting my time trying to make the original one work.

The engine does move so that's a plus.

The interior is also in pretty good shape but the fabric on the seats looks tired.

Signals and headlights work but I haven't tested the starter or the alt.

So far no major eye pokers... just a solid little car that wants to get back on the road !!!

So you're going to go over there to get it. But you would need a truck to pick it up no.

Don't all Soviet armored vehicles come with a pipe you screw on top of them to get air into the engine and cross rivers while submerged? I don't see why it wouldn't exist for cars as well
On a more serious note, Ladas were imported into Western countries in the 70s and 80s and offered as cheap and rustic vehicles, and had their fans.
