Here’s the next new addition to the ‘light up the Ninja 250″ project.
I absolutely loved the LED turn signals in the mirrors of the 09 GSX-R600 looking at it at the bike shop. So, sometime soon, I’m going to call up the Suzuki shop and ask the parts guy how much they cost. From what I understand, most mirror mounts are the same. Except for maybe drilling a hole between the two screws and putting a rubber grommet in there for the wires, I think it might work.
Now comes the question — if I did this, I’d probably want to keep the stock turn signals, too.
Do I run the stock turn signals as running lights only, or do I have them be combo running lights / turn signals. Likewise, do I run the LED mirror turn signals as running lights / turn signals, or just as turn signals.
And what’s a device that will convert turn signals into running light / turn signal combos?
I was poking around the Signal Dynamics website and saw they have a brake-light Wig-Wag box. So, the two additional brake lights I put in the unused lenses on the back of my 03 Ninja 250 could alternate between each other for more visibility. I’m just wondering if it’d be overkill considering the center brake light is on a Rear-Alert 6-blink, then solid controller.
I also saw that Signal Dynamics has running light / brake light license plate frames. Are those any good? Bright? The only reason I ask is, even their B-stock closeouts are still around the $70 mark for those.
Maybe I should factor in a Ninja 650 or 500 Reg/Rec too from the load?
July 12, 2009 at 8:41 am #20518EliasParticipantI’d say the mirrors should be running/turn signal dual purpose, and leave the OEM signals alone. In my mind, looks pretty good, and better visibility for a cage. Splice into the running and turn signal wires, and just run through that. If you’re running LED’s you shouldn’t notice any dimming.

July 12, 2009 at 1:24 pm #20520briderdtParticipantThe FMVSS and various state regulations say that the turn signals need to be “at the same level” from the ground (meaning all the fronts at the same level, and all the rears at the same level).
Remember, MOST aftermarket mods don’t comply with the laws, so be careful.

Check it out you might just find exactly all the answers you need. If not post it on there and I can bet it would take less then a couple of hours before you get a hand full of responses.July 12, 2009 at 6:08 pm #20529EliasParticipantThe GSXR has its signals higher than most other bikes because they are on the mirrors…as they are this way on some cages as well. Now I’m curious if you could even get a ticket for this. I doubt it, as most cops wouldn’t even be able to tell if it was OEM or not. But who knows, brider brought up a good point, let us know what you find if you dig into that.
July 13, 2009 at 12:33 am #20542briderdtParticipantMy point was that you’d have signals at two heights in front. That is a problem (per the FMVSS). Also, each signal has to have a lighted area of 3.5 square inches (which works out to a circle of 2.1″ diameter). Must be amber in front, and can be either amber or red in back.
Don’t get me started on reflectors…
July 14, 2009 at 7:27 am #20600EliasParticipantUghh, I remember getting pulled over a couple years back. Wasn’t speeding. Wasn’t wreckless. Didn’t run anything. I simply had white turn signals. Give me a F-…ok. Yeah there are some laws that might prohibit you from doing what you want to do to your bike. Didn’t know about the two different signal heights law. Wow, they are scrounging the bottom of the well aren’t they?! Oink oink oink all the way home…luckily most officers will be real about how ridiculous some of these laws are, and give you a fix-it-ticket

Cages have turn signals in their mirrors and on the front of the engine compartment.I keep reading that FMVSS and they keep mentioning the term “vertical center-line.” WTF does that mean?
The cops here in Ohio just don’t seem to care about lighting. I’ve seen people ride around on the road with blue underglow, green underglow, blue LEDs on their windshield wiper sprayer nozzle, etc. As long as it doesn’t blink, it’s good. Ohio’s motor vehicle laws are quite lax on lighting.
Anyone know who sells red lenses for the rear stock turn signals on the 250? AsianCycle has clear ones, but that doesn’t do me any good. I want to convert them to red, and strangely enough DOT doesn’t accept a red light bulb. It’s the lens that makes the light red.

You might want to check out ebay for the integrated mirror/turn signals…..we found them for about 50 bucks that includes shipping. Just waiting for them to come in. Hubby’s bike didn’t come with turn signals and needed new mirrors (purely cosmetic), so we went with those. There’s a lot to choose from. I’ve noticed that our “local shop” wants at least 50 bucks more for basically everything that we can get from an OEM dealer. They wanted like 170-ish for an ignition, and we got it for 111. We have to wait for the “shop” or order it, or we can just order it and get front door service.
